Mushrooms Become
Source for Eco-Building
by Jessica N. Pasko,
ENN
TROY, N.Y. -- Eben Bayer grew up on a
farm in Vermont learning the intricacies of mushroom harvesting with
his father. Now the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute graduate is
using that experience to create an organic insulation made from
mushrooms.
More at home on a pizza, mushrooms
certainly aren't a typical building material, but Bayer thought they
just might work when given the assignment two years to create a
sustainable insulation.
Combining his agricultural knowledge
with colleague Gavin McIntyre's interest in sustainable technology,
the two created their patented "Greensulate" formula, an organic,
fire-retardant board made of water, flour, oyster mushroom spores
and perlite, a mineral blend found in potting soil. They're hoping
the invention will soon be part of the growing market for
eco-friendly products...

Low-Impact Commercial
Complex in a Small Town
Envirolink
The
Sustainable Technology Center (STC) in Friday Harbor, Washington
aims to prove that renewable energy and other sustainable systems
can be used cost - effectively in small commercial buildings.
On-site photovoltaic panels supply much of the electricity, heating
loads are met in part with solar hot water, and sewage is treated on
site. The project houses a range of tenants in high-tech and service
industries, and provides conference space for public and private
gatherings.
The STC
is the brainchild of Jim Sackett Pacific Custom Homes, Inc. Sackett
joined forces with J. Ward Phillips, a retired developer and founder
of the International Electric Vehicle Association, to implement the
project. Sackett has since formed a new company, Seventh Generation
Systems, Inc., to consult for clients interested in incorporating
sustainable technologies into building projects. The company's
strength, according to Sackett is providing quick and inexpensive
assessment of the costs and benefits of a whole-systems-approach to
low-impact technologies...

Recycling : Saving
Earth’s Resources
Article Garden
Recycling
is a very important step in slowing down and eventually stopping
wasting of earth’s natural resources. Scientist worldwide are
exploring new ways to have better fuel efficiency and lowering
pollution emissions. In an attempt to reverse the effects of
overusing earth’s valuable natural resources, everyone is called
upon. Recycling is a big part of the effort to re-use and limit the
use of our resources.
There are many categories of products people can recycle. Paper and
its derived products such as carton are now being recycled
successfully everyday.
Other resources like metals are being recycled daily. Such metal
objects as tin cans, aluminum cans and tinfoil plates. Before
recycling metal items, they have to be rinsed and free of food
residue as this can cause toxic problems in the recycling process...
