Q.
James, you
have a very interesting musical background. Could you please tell us a
little about your evolvement as a musician?
A.
I think I was born
with a true love for music. It seems that I’ve been playing drums and
keyboards all my life. There is a picture of me in my studio when I was
no more than 1 years old , playing the piano. I started playing the
drums at our church at the age of 3 and actually won a college talent
show when I was only 7. My parents always encouraged my talent and it
just kept growing from there.
Q. You had
a musical revelation in 2004, could you please elaborate on that?
A.
There is an old
saying that, “Music calms the savage beast.” We are all faced with so
much in today’s world and it seems that every time you turn around, we
are stressed or worried about something. So after personally wrestling
with my own trials in 2004, I begin to realize and feel true purpose in
making music that would be calming and help relax the listener,
spiritually and mentally.
Q. You
just released a new CD, “Warm Embrace.” What were your intentions behind
this recording?
A.
To do for each
listener just what the name implies, give them a “Warm Embrace” with
some soft, peaceful melodies that were inspired by love, nature and my
spiritual and healing beliefs.
Q. Could
you give us some insight into what each song represents?
A.
"Loving Care" and
"Love Affair" tackle that eternal emotion from slightly different
perspectives. Taking care of someone might be the ultimate statement of
love, but other times we are so deeply in love it's all we can think
about. Two special times of each day are represented with the pieces
"Morning Sunrise" and "Desert Sunset." Every normal lifetime is made up
of about 25,000 days, give or take a few thousand. Every morning
represents a fresh start, a chance to help someone or make your own life
better. Sunset is the perfect time of day to reflect on what kind of day
it was, what you accomplished, and what you have to be thankful for.
Four compositions have to do with healing –- "Warm Embrace" (it was my
way of cheering on a 12-year-old girl I know who is in a wheelchair with
multiple sclerosis), "Healing Touch" (when you are distressed and need
to be soothed, ask the Higher Power that you believe in to comfort you),
"Cool Waters" (whether you are drinking it or submersing yourself in it,
there is nothing like the refreshing, regenerative power of water) and
"Soul Refresher" (it's not enough just to be refreshed on the outside,
your mind and soul need it too, usually through prayer or meditation).
The album ends
with two heartfelt numbers, "Peace" and "Paradise," based on concepts
that have a place inside us as well as out in the world. In these
troubled times, with wars happening in many places, each person needs to
try to find peace within themselves first and then do what they can to
make peace with the people around them. Similarly, finding paradise
requires you to look within initially, then try to make our planet a
better place, and finally prepare for life-after-death in whatever type
of heaven you believe in.
Q. What
has been your most rewarding experience as a musician?
A.
My most rewarding
experience was when I heard and saw the finished product of “Warm
Embrace”, and knew that I could now share this with the world.
Q. You are
also a fourth-generation minister. Do you still give weekly sermons?
A.
No. Since
releasing Warm Embrace, I no longer give weekly sermons to a
congregation. But by remaining sensitive to the needs of others I still
continue to reach out and minister in many ways. I believe that my life
should be a living testimony, and as people watch my behavior and
interaction with others, I hope they see something in me that is good
and upright.
Q. How has
your ministry influenced your music?
A.
My music is for
the mind, body and spirit. Our mind, body and spirit must be cared for
and we should only fill it with what is right, good and will be of
benefit to us. I believe in making music that is inspirational and
positive.
Q. What
would you say have been your biggest challenges in the world of music?
A.
As with most
professions, learning the industry, making the right contacts and
getting the music ‘heard’. I enjoy creating music not just for myself,
but because I want to share it with the world and maybe bring a smile to
someone’s face or add a little joy to their day.
Q. What do
you wish to accomplish yet with your music?
A.
To reach as many
listeners as possible and hope that it has a positive impact on their
life by giving them a few moments of peace and relaxation in this very
busy world we live in.
Q. Where
do you see yourself going from here?
A.
Prayerfully …UP!
I want to continue to be inspired and to improve upon my talent while
reaching more and more listeners who will love the music as I do and
benefit from it.
Q. Do you
have any parting words of advice for aspiring musicians?
A.
When I think of
the word aspire, I think of a true desire to achieve something that is
truly important to a person. My parting words would be, don’t lose that
desire… and don’t lose hope because as long as we have hope, we have
faith and as long as we have faith we have belief that we can and will
accomplish
