Jim Wilson

by Sumara Love

Pianist, Jim Wilson is truly a shining light of contemporary music. His music touches your heart and expands your spirit while it transports you on "a magical, musical carpet ride of melodic beauty," as Carole King so aptly put it. His new release, A Place in My Heart, is a beautiful collection of original compositions that were inspired by people and places in Jim's life that have profoundly moved him and is sure to rouse your soul.

Jim, listening to your music is such a treat for the soul; what influenced your style of music?

That remains a mystery to me actually.  I grew up listening to and being influenced by every thing from James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan to Led Zepellin and Black Sabbath (and everything in between!)  For whatever reason, the music that comes out of me in it's purest form seems to be an expression of some deeper sentiment that is trying to surface.  So much of what I compose comes to me with zero effort.  My best musical ideas come to me when I'm doing something else.  Very often, I'll be reading the paper and realize that for the last 10 minutes, I've been going over a new melody in my head.

When did your interest in music begin?

A friend of my mother's gave me a guitar when I was 7.  I started plunking around on it and when I discovered James Taylor, I worked up many of his songs.  I think much of my style on piano comes from my transferring that finger picking style to the keyboard.

Who have been some of your mentors?

Besides those mentioned above, Jackson Browne, Keith Jarrett, Bruce Hornsby, Sting, and oh yeah... a little unknown band called The Beatles.

How is it that you had the good fortune of working with renowned musicians David Sanborn and David Fogelberg to name just a couple of the talented, successful musicians you’ve worked with?

Ages ago, I helped develop a midi-adapter that allows you to hook up synthesizers to your piano.  At the time, I was the solitary guy on the planet that you could get this from.  I had the royalty of rock seeking me out.  It was pretty cool, I must confess.  I got to hang out with just about all my heros including Dan Fogelberg, Paul McCartney, Phil Collins and Elton John.  Good fortune indeed!

What would you say have been some of your best moments as a musician?

Nothing beats the thrill of performing.  My deepest desire in life is to create music that connects with people on a deeper level, so when that happens, it's incredibly rewarding.

Where do you see yourself going from here? What are your future goals?

Musically, I have my next 3 records charted out.  Also, I'm doing a concert in TX in February that's going to be filmed and hopefully edited into my second public television special.  More importantly, my goals are to get deeper into yoga / making my spiritual health a priority above all else!

Do you have any advice for musicians who haven't yet broken into the professional arena?

Yes... DON'T DO IT!!  TURN BACK WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!!  Just kidding.  It's a challenging profession, but can be very rewarding.  If you're going  to jump in, do so with the goal of seeking excellence.  Focus on what it is that you can bring to the table that is uniquely you.

Please give us your concert schedule for 2006 so we can all treat ourselves to one of your "cinematic melodic journeys."
