Photo of Sally-annSally-ann, when did you first become interested in photography and why?

I have always had a great interest in photography, even as a child. As a young adult I became a photographic model in London England in the 1970s. When I immigrated to Australia I began doing more with my camera. To me photography is, and as the saying goes, “A picture speaks a thousand words.” Some wonderful memories can be captured for ever.

Did you have any formal training or are you self-taught?

I was self taught over many years.

What inspires or motivates you to be a photographer?

Being able to capture the moment, being in that moment, it will never to be repeated, creation in all its glory, its emotions and colors, capturing family’s moments, children, wildlife or creation and wilderness, waterfalls, sunsets, the ocean, etc.

What is your favorite subject or subjects and where are your favorite locations?

Creation, Tasmania with its rainforests that run down to the ocean, the colors there are surreal. Also I have enjoyed capturing many sunsets and water falls here in Queensland in the Hinterlands and some aerial photography from my oldest sons Ultra light trike.

Where is the most spectacular place you’ve ever been?

Too many to name one really, but I think the sunsets over Georges Bay, St. Helens, Tasmania. They did take my breath away as they bounced off the bay.

What sort of equipment do you use? Have you gone digital?

Yes, I have a Nikon Digital SLR

I went to an Ansel Adams exhibit at the Chicago Museum of Art several years ago and I remember reading that he said that the most important aspect of his photography came about in the darkroom. He said that taking the picture was only the first step, and creating a real piece of art, for him, happened in the developing process where he could manipulate the development. I know you can now pretty much achieve the same sort of effect in Photoshop. What are your feelings about moving into the computer age?

Well, I have done most of my work with out Photoshop because I like the idea of capturing the moment. The clearness of the air in Tasmania is so easy to just do good work. I have only used that technology when there is a real need in cases of too much cloud cover from flying in the trike. All my work in Tasmania was untouched by Photoshop. I would consider it another art form and will use it if its serves my purpose
