GE Energy Signs US$
730 Million Agreement with EDP
Windtech
GE Energy has signed a global frame
agreement with the renewable area of EDP - Energias de Portugal, SA
to supply wind turbines totalling more than 500MW of new capacity
for wind projects to be developed during 2008 and 2009 in Europe and
the USA.
Total value of the agreement will be US$ 730 million. Under the
frame agreement with EDP, GE will supply Neo Energia, the European
renewable branch of EDP, with 80 2.5xl wind turbines for new wind
projects in Europe and provide Horizon Wind Energy LLC, EDP's
American branch, with 201 1.5MW wind turbines for projects in the

Don't Let the
Utilities Turn Out the Lights on Solar Energy
A Message From Bonnie Raitt and Robert
Redford, Envirolink
Last year, California passed a law, referred to as net metering,
that lets large solar energy systems on factories, schools, offices
and other big buildings receive credit for the electricity they give
back to the electric grid. It has been a huge success, sparking a
1000% increase in the number of large solar energy systems in just
one year and creating a model for the country. AB 58 by Assemblyman
Fred Keeley (D - Boulder Creek) would extend this law past the end
of this year, when it expires.
But California's three big utilities - PGandE, Edison, and Sempra -
have launched a stealth campaign to undermine it. They have amended
the bill in a way that cuts in half the credit given for solar
electricity. If these utilities get their way, many people who would
otherwise like to install solar panels will no longer be able to
afford to. And California's solar power market, the most vibrant in
the nation, will be devastated, with grave consequences for the
environment...

Best Energy Strategy:
Small, Green And Local, Experts Say
Science Daily
A new
study says the best energy strategies to meet the world’s growing
demand for electricity are green, small and local.
The wisest energy strategy for the United States, and indeed other
countries facing similar challenges, is to move away from their
reliance on large-scale centralized coal and nuclear plants, and
instead, invest in renewable energy systems and small scale
decentralized generation technologies.
According to Benjamin Sovacool from the Virginia Polytechnic
Institute and State University, these alternative technologies are
simultaneously feasible, affordable, environmentally friendly,
reliable and secure...

Taber Wind Farm Opens
in Alberta
Renewable Energy Access
ENMAX
Green Power announced that the official opening of Alberta's largest
wind energy operation, ENMAX Corporation's Taber Wind Farm, occurred
this month.
Costing nearly $140 million, the 37 Enercon turbines located
southeast of the town of Taber have a total generation output of 80
megawatts (MW). The Government of Canada will contribute about $19
million over ten years towards the production of electricity from
the wind farm.
"The Taber Wind Farm is playing a meaningful role in changing
Alberta's energy industry by increasing the supply of renewable
energy to the province", said Bob Mills, Member of Parliament for
Red Deer, Alberta on behalf of the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of
Natural Resources. "It's also a great example of our government and
industry working together. These collaborations are important if we
want to achieve our goal, which is supplying clean, renewable energy
to all Canadians..."
