Breakthrough: Girl's Writings Explain Her Behavior and Feelings
Doctors Amazed by
Carly Fleischmann's Ability to Describe the Disorder From the
Inside
by John
McKenzie, ABC News
Two years ago, working with pictures and symbols on a computer
keyboard, she started typing and spelling out words. The computer
became her voice.
"All of a sudden these words started to pour out of her, and it was
an exciting moment because we didn't realize she had all these
words," said speech pathologist Barbara Nash. "It was one of those
moments in my career that I'll never forget."
Then Carly began opening up, describing what it was like to have
autism and why she makes odd noises or why she hits herself...

Rare Egyptian
"Warrior" Tomb Found
An unusual,
well-preserved burial chamber that may contain the mummy of an
ancient warrior has been discovered in Luxor.
by Steven Stanek, National
Geographic News
Scientists opened the tomb—found in Dra Abul Naga, an ancient
cemetery on Luxor's west bank—on Wednesday.
Inside the burial shaft—a recess crudely carved from bedrock—experts
found a closed wooden coffin inscribed with the name "Iker," which
translates to "excellent one" in ancient Egyptian.
Near the coffin they also found five arrows made of reeds, three of
them still feathered...

Blind Golfer Hits
Hole-in-One
Ananova
A 92-year-old blind golfer has hit a hole-in-one in Florida.
Leo Fiyalko was playing a 110-yard, par-3 hole in Clearwater,
reports the St Petersburg Times.
"It was my first hole-in-one, and I never saw it," he said. "I was
just trying to put the ball on the green."
Mr Fiyalko once played to a seven handicap but he began suffering
macular degeneration 10 years ago.
He is now legally blind and needs help lining up his shots and
finding his golf balls...

Communicating Sustainability Effectively Within the Workplace
Tiplepundit
As leaders in the corporate sustainability movement, it is important
to be able to share our ideas with others who may not exactly "get
it" yet. Anna Clark, president of EarthPeople (a sustainability
consulting firm in Dallas, TX), shared her strategies for getting
others in your workplace on board on ClimateBiz.com. Implementing
these suggestions the next time you discuss why eco-efficient
lighting works best at your next board meeting can help guide your
company further along on the sustainability path.
Clark believes that information should be tailored to different
personality types. She says, "Human beings are subjective creatures;
to sell them on sustainability, you must meet them where they are."
This means understanding each individual's perspective and level of
receptiveness to green concepts. She believes that there are aspects
of sustainability that everyone can relate to - it's just a matter
of building upon what each person already knows and believes in.
We can also be inspiring in our approach and "emphasize practice,
not theory." By crafting emails and newsletters that are written in
an engaging, informative, and practical manner, you can educate
co-workers on the benefits of greening your organization...

Four Lost Cities of the Americas
by Chris Ingham Brooke, Environmental Graffiti
As a kid, I was always fascinated by the fact
that cities could be lost and rediscovered. The notion that
cities once prosperous and bustling with people have since
become forgotten urban deserts eaten by the landscape around
them is both fascinating and puzzling at the same time. How can
you lose something as large as a city?
Quite easily as it happens. So I’ve decided to start a catalogue
- a series if you like, on lost cities that have been
rediscovered. This is the first.
Palenque
Palenque is probably one of the most well-studied Mayan
settlements, yet only 5% on the city has been uncovered. The
medium-sized settlement is located deep in the Mexican state of
Chiapas and has some incredibly well-preserved architecture. The
records for Palenque go back to 431 when the first king K’uk
Balam ruled the territory, however many archaeologists suspect
the city is older than that.
Desertion
The city was sacked in 710 by the realm of Toniná and came under
increasing stress. Gradually the population became sparser until
the city was totally deserted. The city was abandoned for
several centuries and was covered by the surrounding forest when
the Conquistadores arrived in Chiapas in the 16th century.
