FUN FACTS ABOUT SOLAR ENERGY

-With a magnifying glass you can hold the free power of the sun in your hand.

-"Solar" is based on the Latin word "Sol".

-If it was completely captured, the sunlight that shines on the Earth in just a single hour of a single day, would provide electrical power to light every light, heat every home, run every motor and power every electrical need in the entire world!

-Passive solar heating has been used for thousands of years.  The Greeks and Persians were some of the ancient cultures that designed and built their houses to take maximum advantage of winter heating from the sun.

-Solar cells are made from silicon, the most common component of sand.  Just one ton of silica sand can be used to make photovoltaic solar cells capable of producing as much electricity as burning 1,000,000 pounds of coal!
